Philosophy
Stevens Maker is a company that believes in the power and validity of the handmade art object. Our philosophy is rooted in the theories set forth by historical figures such as William Morris, Soetsu Yanagi and Bernard Leach, it also relates to some extent, to the theories of David Pye and Mokichi Okada. Essentially, on a spiritual level, we are interested in what can be learned about our connection to the natural world by studying the ancient cultures that have lived close to it.

Through our diverse activities related to contemporary art and fine craft, we are attempting to set forth a manifesto for our time in light of our developmental history as a culture. By considering what we have learned and experienced throughout history, we hope to develop a new understanding for our time that honors tradition, acknowledges the presence of the natural world, embraces the qualities of the handmade and is cognizant of the artists/makers evolved role in the twenty-first century.

Through publishing essays, providing video/multimedia production and curatorial services, Stevens Maker strives to establish a new philosophical understanding for our time. These concepts focus on the role of the artist/maker in the twenty-first century, ideas surrounding authorship, the handmade versus mass production, links between Eastern and Western cultures and the embracing folk traditions as a point of departure in contemporary art.

By establishing philosophical connections between the East and West, it is our highest hope that we can help create a new understanding of our world that restores harmony between human beings of diverse cultures, the environment and ultimately, to the planet on which we live.
